Usability study
Design for additional devices using progressive enhancement method.
Searched for appropriate images and optimized them with Riot.
Goal
Design an app that will improve education on the topic of first aid help, encourage more people to learn first aid and be aware of certain steps which can save someone’s life.
Target Audience
Application’s primary target users who are interested in learning how to help a person in need, users who like to broaden their knowledge of first aid help.
This is one of the projects done for Google Certificate. Going into research my assumptions were that there is no need in such application while there is a number of online sources to read and watch. While conducting research interviews users attitude could be divided into two groups the ones who say they do not need to learn anything, everything is on Google and another group that an application would be useful, that everyone should learn First Aid. Users indicated as well that such application should be available on all devices, it should be available constantly, not depending on internet connection, so everyone can review knowledge any time.
I have interviewed 9 users for this project 4 from USA and 5 from the Ukraine to see if there are crucial differences in need of people who live in War zone and peaceful life.
Questions - Set #1 for USA users.
1. What source of information are you using in case you need to find out about first aid or emergency care?
2. What device are you using as a rule?
3. What factors are slowing down you on finding knowledge on first aid?
4. What is your experience with that source?
5. If you were thinking of learning first aid what steps would you take?
6. What challenges do you think people might have learning first aid?
7. How those challenges can be resolved?
8. Do you know what organizations provide knowledge on first aid?
9. While signing up for such class what would be important for you?
10. Do you think there should be graphic/realistic visual materials while learning first aid?
Questions - Set #2 for Ukrainian users. I prepared a different set of questions, because some users were already on roads migrating to other countries as refuges and Set #1 was not that relevant for them.
1. How do you think, in a situation when there no way to receive professional first medical help or while expecting for it will it be useful to have application with first aid on the phone/tablet/computer?
2. In which situations it will be useful?
3. How do you think this application should have videos, graphics, pictures, or just short text, like to for example explanation how to help while bleeding or high sugar?
4. What device would you personally use?
Mostly nonrelated to medical field users were negative about necessity of the application
People when stressed cannot read long articles, users would like to have short to the point instructions with clear descriptive pictures or videos for first aid even without having internet connection. Plus, users would like to return to the saved information, being able to repeat previously read or watched instructions.

Audit
For competitive audit I have chosen direct competitor Red Cross app and two indirect Mayo clinic, WebMD. Red Cross is the most relevant and easy to use app dedicated to First Aid, my design is based on Red Cross layout. Mayo clinic, WebMD not only do not have dedicated pages for first aid, it took me extra 4-5 steps to find information I was looking for.
Initial design concepts
I did a quick ideation exercise to come up with ideas for how to address gaps identified in the competitive audit. My focus was specifically on creating visual aid in articles, so users can see pictures and videos on the subject, option to save to favorites and review later.

Conclusion
My participants were excited to help and provide input to the design process. I hope free and well-organized information can help people learn First Aid.
I learned that users of all ages are excited to make an impact and can share interesting ideas.
Next step is to make usability study with responsive design. Design dark more for all devices.
My personal thought on the necessity of the application: it should be a default application on any device as a Timer, Clock. Red Cross should have this application in all countries in all languages installed for all users as a general knowledge with First Aid, Disaster Relief, phone directories for suicidal lines, depression, PTSD lines. Phones already are a source of knowledge as public libraries.
